Doing nothing and hoping it settles Or being pushed toward surgery
And neither feels like a clear answer.

It’s not your fault

Latest research on meniscus injuries and healing

Large studies have shown that around 60–70% of people report meaningful improvement with exercise-based treatment alone, with outcomes similar to surgery in trials like the METEOR trial. Longer-term research has even found no meaningful difference between surgery and non-surgery for many people. This doesn’t mean every meniscus “heals” perfectly on a scan… however, movement can often become comfortable and free again with correct loading at the knee.

Do you really need surgery for knee osteoarthritis?

If you’ve been told your knee osteoarthritis will only get worse and surgery is inevitable, it can feel like you’re running out of options. But current research and clinical guidelines tell a different story. The OARSI guidelines recommend exercise, education, and load management as first-line treatment for knee osteoarthritis, and show that many people can improve their pain and function without needing surgery. This means your knee can become stronger, more comfortable, and more reliable with the right approach — giving you a real option if you are wanting to avoid surgery.

Bakers Cyst Treatment

If you’ve noticed a swelling or tight lump behind your knee, it can catch you off guard — especially when it starts affecting how you walk or bend your leg. And it’s easy to assume something needs to be removed or fixed directly. But a Baker’s cyst is often a response to irritation inside the knee, commonly linked to conditions like knee osteoarthritis or meniscus changes. Research shows that when the underlying knee irritation is managed, the cyst can reduce in size or settle on its own without surgery. Clinical approaches that focus on exercise, movement, and reducing joint irritation are commonly recommended as first-line care. It means many people can return to comfortable movement without needing it drained or removed — by addressing what’s driving it in the first place.

Frequently Asked Questions

In many cases, yes — and it’s a good thing to explore that first.
If you’re trying to figure out how to avoid meniscus surgery, it usually starts with understanding what’s actually driving your knee pain.
For many people, it’s not just the meniscus itself… it’s how the knee is moving and being loaded day to day.
When that improves, symptoms can often resolve — without rushing into surgery.

Most advice focuses on rest or basic strengthening. And that can help… to a point. But if you’re serious about learning how to avoid meniscus surgery, the key is – Improving how your knee moves during real-life activities like walking, stairs, getting up, and down.
Because that’s where the knee gets loaded incorrectly. Correcting the loading and movements can often resolve pain, restriction and swelling related to meniscus injuries.

Some tears can heal on their own, however often favourable conditions needs to be present to support the body to heal as otherwise it can lead to long term issues. By correcting movement patterns to reduce loading on the knee joint often supports the body’s natural healing process.

General exercises can sometimes aggravate a meniscus tear especially if the movement involves extra loading or pressure on the knee. It is important to correct the movement and loading issue first prior to participating in exercises to reduce the risk of aggravation especially if you are wanting to avoid surgery.

It is important to understand that scans do not always predict pain and function and can lead to misguided treatment where the focus shifts to ‘fixing’ the joint instead of regaining movement. If your main priority is to regain movements then it is best to understand your movement patterns and pain. The free masterclass will help you understand more about where your pain is coming from so you can determine the best treatment option for you.
